Prices of Textbooks and etc.

August 7, 2006

So I went and bought my textbooks today. And I find out that they have become bigger, heavier, and extremely expensive. Although I somehow spent less then last year, but that is most likely because I didn’t need to buy the math book since it’s the same one I got last year. And so you all know I didn’t have to pay for them since they are covered by financial aid, but still I think that today, at least in the US, textbooks have become not just too expensive, but overflowing with too much useless information and nothing useful.

Today when I have a question I just go over to Google or Wikipedia and find my answer, it’s usually in a much more succinct and understandable way and I can look at any other related information to broaden my understanding of the exact subject. However when I look into a textbook, most of the time I’m met with a lot of useless information and things that aren’t that much use in real life. It seems that textbooks are just the basics and that if a professor isn’t satisfied with them he/she will just explain whatever else they fell is prevalent and will assume that you wrote it down in your notes and will remember it for the test. Of course not all textbooks are like this, a math textbook doesn’t have much in the way of writing and is usually filled with more diagrams and can be used for more then one year as in the case of my Calculus textbook. But I still think that a lot of the other books could got through some revisions to be slimmed down and made much less heavy, and extraneous, not to mention cheaper.

That’s it for today’s rant…I hope I won’t be lazy and write more >_<

Hmmm…agreed. Study books are terrible expensive and the internet is a more important source for me than books.
